Name! My! Snail!
Through an interesting (and for other folk probably bizarre but for Clan Thalia pretty much business-as-usual) set of circumstances, I am now the proud keeper of a Giant African Land Snail (Achatina sp.)

This is a hermaphrodite mollusc of pleasing appearance (if you don't mind slug-type guys) and placid nature. S/he's about seven inches long when all uncurled and seems to be happy here.
Trouble is, I don't know what to call it.

So folks, here is your chance to bestow a name on a very large snail. Best suggestion wins... well, nothing really, other than the pride of knowing you won. (This is a phenomenon Malabar has noted, that many popular British TV game shows don't actually give prizes to the winners... see, for example, Have I Got News for You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks etc)

A name which fits a boy and a girl both would be choice. Avoid obvious ones like Brian.

Have fun with my snail!

EDIT - in their poll for naming a whale, the best Greenpeace could get is 'Mister Splashy Pants'. I hope we can improve on that!

That's not a snail.

This is a snail:

If you must have an androgynous name, Shelby.

Alternatively, Ferdinand. Hey, I have a girl cat named Simon.

Orlando!

do you not recall the time I brought home several baby specimens of this species from my pet-shop job, & we put dabs of different-coloured glow-in-the-dark paint on their shells to tell them apart, back when we lived in Midian?

I'd forgotten that! Good times...

Orlando is winning so far.

In less-happy pet news, Constantine is going blind. Also he has trouble with his back legs. He's still mellow and seems happy - even when Chiana is jumping on his head and grabbing his tail (he really missed Methuselah when he died and was quite pitifully wailing - he doesn't do that since Chi arrived). He's the best part of eighteen now. He gets lots of love and tuna and we carry him around more than he used to tolerate.

Now, that's a snail! Names, eh? How about 'Rover', 'Satan', 'Fred Bassett', 'Doodles', 'Pugsley', 'Gary'... funnily enough there is a whole webpage devoted to 'fun snail names': http://www.fundeo.co.uk/_asp/snail_names1.html

After Spongebob Squarepants's pet. It is, admittedly a sea snail, but it mews like a cat, of course.

Culling from my gut reaction I'd name it either 'Spittle,' 'Slimer' or 'Ooze'
